Flying Humour

Came across this website and it kept me amused for a while. =)

Especially liked this one as it reminds me of typical Singaporeans! ie cannot say good one. LOL

It seems that a young man volunteered for military service during World War II. He had such a high aptitude for aviation that he was sent right to Pensecola skipping boot camp. The very first day at Pensecola he solos and is the best flier on the base. All they could do was give him his gold wings and assign him immediately to an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

On his first day aboard he took off and single-handedly shot down 6 Japanese Zeroes. Then climbing up to 20,000 ft. he found 9 more Japanese planes and shot them all down, too.

Noting that his fuel was getting low, he descended, circled the carrier and came in for a perfect landing on the deck. He threw back the canopy, climbed out and jogged over to the captain.

Saluting smartly he said, "Well sir, how did I do on my very first day?" The captain turned around, bowed, and replied, "You make one velly impoltant mistake!"

an extra second for everyone!

Cool! We all get an extra second for the coming year! What can happen in a second? Well, more time for merry making or spreading good cheer or even eating. For me, that's one more second of sleep.... ahhhh. =)

S'poreans travelling

I read with dismay that yet another S'porean was the victim of a robbery up north, and this time, shots were fired. The new method used was to fake an accident, then try to steal the car via robbery at gunpoint.

zeenie's solution: get a couple of commandos/SWAT/rugby players to drive around in an SUV with S'porean plates with a m'sian van following as backup. Should an attempted carjacking be made, the lads would jump out and introduce them to the wonderful world of grievous bodily harm, old school style. Bloody ridiculous. I never thought i'd see the day when we need American-style anti-carjacking and anti-theft devices.

zeenie's solution II: rig up an SUV and let them have the damn car if carjacked. Immobolise the engine and electrocute them (just in case they try to break out of the car) via contact pads in the car seat. What the hell, just electrocute the whole bloody car, the rubber should insulate itself from innocent bystanders. GRrrrrr....

zeenie's christmas gift of the year

This cool toy wins zeenie's christmas gift of the year award. What a neat idea! =)

Maybe i can jury-rig a normal RC car (which i've been thinking of getting, if anything, it would frustrate my dog) with an MP3 player.... hmmmmmmmmm.....

Happy Holidays to all!

King Kong

Jeepers, now they want to nominate the big black beast from the ..errr...east as best actor! What next? King Kong 2? I know, we can call it "King Kong 2: Return of the King Kong" or "King Kong strikes back" or "Pung or Kong" a HK production by Stephen Chow about a mahjung playing gorilla (Andy Lau making a cameo appearance) or even "Son of King Kong: the untold story" starring a giant hulk of a monkey/gorrilla/fur covered muscles, with a pechant for hugging tourists, the product of a one-night stand between KK and Ah Meng. I think i need to take a break from thinking now. LOL

Wow, car of the year (NZ) results are out!

And the winner is: The Volkswagen Golf GTi. Been seeing quite a few of these here in Singapore, and it is a beautiful car. Can't believe it only costs NZ$50k there, while we've got to pay an arm and a leg here (how to drive like that, you tell me lah).

Link to the article.

In other news, crufty has been messing around with his car again (lamda settings....ha!) and managed to get a huge amount of boost from a standstill. Check out his video! =) His other posts could teach Johnny a thing or two, but ssssshhhh, you didn't hear that from me 'cos i'm still waiting for Johnny to Zhng my car. lol

btw, i would need Johnny to procure me a car as well, since i'm currently public transport user. LOL

External influences

I read with dismay that Australia is going to resume training of an Indon military unit, especially one with such a shady history.

What with recent events, i guess i can say that i just dun understand the aussies. They seem to be the masters of illogical thinking these days.

A nose for winning

A german shepherd up against two border collies and a farm dog (a huntaway?) and the german shepherd won! Wow.

Homebrew CPU Home Page

Simply amazing. A homebuilt (not assembled ah!) computer!

Way cool. I especially liked his comments at the end regarding his social life. =)

Maybe i should record this for future use

Interesting, the sound of dog's 'laugh' calms other pooches. Maybe I should record jeanie's laughter for days when she gets upset about the thunderstorms we get here in Singapore. =)

One Sat night

I just remembered something that happened one Saturday.

Wibblewamble and I were headed out to dinner when we were approached by a guy and a girl looking rather breathless and clutching a few items in their hands. They approached us and explained that they were part of a team in a competition that was modelled along the lines of the TV show "the apprentice" and that they had to sell some products by a certain time. Their sales pitch consisted of "will you help us?" and "please help us?" and they said that they could not tell us about the competition as they were sworn to secrecy and were not allowed to.

In the midst of their explanations, i asked "so what's your sales pitch?" to which they offered a couple of crackers and packets of instant coffee, EACH going for 5 bucks. Which led to "so what's your sale pitch?" again, 'cos I was thinking that this pitch has got to be special if they think they can convince me to pay 5 bucks for a couple of crackers or a packet of instant coffee.

"Erm, you see ah, i had this tie on just now and we are really in a rush due to the time restrictions from the competition" Man, what stress does to some people's hearing.

In stepped ww, "Look, I really want to help, and from what I gather, you are supposed to sell things correct?" He nodded enthusiastically, smelling a potential sucker buyer. "So? Sell it to me, convince me." "No you see…" and he went on again about the competition. I was about to give up and lower the price down to 2 bucks just 'cos I happened to have 2 bucks in my pocket, but ww (bless her) persisted.

"You really ought to have a gameplan ready before approaching people, as opposed to coming up to them and hoping that they'd support your scheme." An valid point with S'poreans who can be world-class armchair skeptics, especially since it was Saturday evening in the midst of Shenton Way, so people they meet tend to have just come off doing overtime work, not really in the best of moods to face a "can you help us by giving us 5 bucks for something that costs 100 times less?" kind of approach.

"Let me give you an example," i chirped in. "Take this coffee ah..." as i turned to ww. "Miss ah, this one ah, really good coffee, better than the kopi tiam's kopi gao siu dai. i can see that you're headed out after a hard day, well this is just the thing to perk you up! Believe when i tell you, energy will flow through your veins ah. Look at me, i had a cup 6 hours ago, and i'm still going! And i will keep going because i know i have a few more of these in my pocket. Now ordinarily i wouldn't sell this special coffee, but today, we are supporting a competition, so i am forced to do so....." and so on.

"You see? That is a sales pitch. It does not consist of you telling me your problems and asking me to help you, but of you asking me about my problems, identifying a problem or a need to which you have a solution and selling me that solution." continued ww the marketing lecturer. At this point, we could see the pained look on their faces, i think they were wondering how they could get out of this one. LOL. ww solved it by buying the packet of crackers with an "i hope you learnt something today."

We found out at the end that the guy was 24 while the girl was 19, but they demonstrated the sales capability of a depressed hedgehog. How disappointing to know that our youths these days care so much about results but not about the process of getting those results. I'd bet that if i started on some random pitch, i might have been able to get him to pay me back ten bucks instead. LOL

WW: promptly got scolded by parents for buying the crackers after returning home and telling the above story. Hope the guy and the girl learnt something though. (If anything, they probably would have learnt that approaching people in the CBD on Saturday night equals getting a lecture from crabby office workers :P

words that should be in the dictionary

via riceandsoup

The Washington Post’s Mensa Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.

I especially liked

7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn’t get it.

From Stuff: Customs denies forcing woman to do 'nude sit-ups'

Funny how things seem to surface at the same time. Nude sit-ups? Nude Ear squats i can kinda vaguely understand, since anything hidden in a body cavity would fall out. Dun see the logic of sit-ups though.

What utter bollocks. If she has always been known as Sam, does this mean she has to change her name to have her cafe named after her now? I dun even see what's the fuss, since i can clearly distinguish the Seattle coffee company from Sam's cafe.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire

We went to watch this and it was quite entertaining. It did feel rushed at certain bits which made you want more, but then it also did feel draggy at other bits, so i guess it evened out. Most of it was quite unique and believable, although some bits made me think "sure or not? like dat oso can ah?".

Somehow, during the movie, i always knew what was going to happen next, even though i have never read a single book by JK Rowling, which either said something about the plot or the directorial skills, i've yet to figure out which. If you have read the previews and the reviews (and the kelonged version is the eview LOL), dealing with girls seems to be a whole different ballgame for "Mr Potter" (as Snape would say), and he and Ron seemed to have the social graces of an inept duck in a henhouse. I dare say that even our typical Singaporean male would have done better (he might cheat and bring along a cousin as a date, but that's beside the point). Did anyone notice that the ballroom scene felt like it was missing a section? One moment, the lads are sitting there feeling sorry for themselves, and the next thing you know, Hermoine is having a real go at Ron, apparently over Krum. I have no idea what a scrawny ginger haired kid would do to a hulk hogan wannabe Krum.....actually i do, he would have asked Mr Potter to kick Krum's ass for him. LOL

Kinda surprised to see a scottish chinese chick in the show, would have been funny if they had a fully chinese character, two words would sum up his/her attitude: spoyr market! Oh wait, they already have such a character in Hermoine. =)

On a different tack now, anyone notice that the first contestant to bow out in the tri-wizards tourney is french? Talk about playing to stereotypes.

Run For Funds

From Jaywalk and friends and more friends.....

Before you can say "not another charity", let me say that Run for Funds is not a charity organisation. I shall not make any witty remarks about charities, instead, i have to say that this sounds like a good cause and has no affiliation whatsoever with Forrest Gump. (oh come on, that hardly counts as a witty remark)

My dad loves running and does it as a hobby as well as to stay fit and healthy. He's twice my age and yet i can only run (in my peak) a quarter of what he does. What's the point of this? None really, just that running is good for one's health and now someone has come up with a really cool way of spreading this benefit around, in particular, helping the less fortunate.

What can you do? You can spread the word and create some awareness and if you like, donate some money. I can't run so can't really contribute in that way. What i WILL do is pledge to skip drinking my afternoon coke and coffee for the next month week day and donate that money. How's about that? Ok lah, next month ok? =)

And it gets messier....

Again, while very little is reported in the local media, it does not mean our tiny island nation is not being noticed. The right to take away a life is always a hot issue, and external opinions will always sound out loud and everpresent. However, it does not mean we can just bury our head in the ground and carry on what we're doing. In related news, hanging may be replaced by injection. Is there even such a thing as more compassionate way of killing someone?

Quickest-ever Mazda sedan

New Zealand's source for motoring news on Stuff.co.nz: Quickest-ever Mazda sedan arrives:

"Driving dynamics are naturally a strength, as with the base Mazda6.

The MPS gets the power grounded effectively, and modulates it well with DSC/TC systems. With its sticky Potenzas and torque shifting ability, it's well resistant to understeer and lines are throttle adjustable as grip shifts front to back. If you think electronic aids are superfluous with 4wd sports sedans, think again. In wet conditions through hilly terrain the DSC and TC systems will keep you on track."

Wow, i've always liked the Mazda 6, and this MPS (the M6? ;P) just takes the cake. It costs the same price as an Evo IX GT (the GSR costs another 6.5k) source.

Simply amazing

I was left speechless after reading this post by Ben, a friend in North California. Still unsure this lack of gab was caused by the views, the ride, the people, or the fact that he managed to ride all that distance, solo. Never knew people were so encouraging there too, good on them.

A must read for any mountain biking fan, and a source of inspiration for my expanding waistline. I shall go do a ride this weekend....wait, i ain't got a bike no more. sigh, stationary bike it is then.

Check out his other rides too.

Intellectual Property

Is this phrase fast becoming an oxymoron? Like "abundant poverty", or "almost exactly" or even "new archeology"? It would be quite amusing if not for the fact that it is happening these days, that for the sake of something intangible (despite calling it 'property'), people are willing to risk reputation and profit for the right of exclusivity.

Just look at these two recent examples from the same company, where copyrights forming a major part of the end-user license agreement (EULA) and of course, the DRM fiasco are used to 'protect' their property. By protect, it means to exclude others, who have not paid for the right, to use such property, and excluding others is a way to make money, or so they think. Instead this is backfiring and turning into a PR person's worst nightmare where everything is going wrong, and it is going to involve lawyers, engineers and hackers, and it will not be pretty. The lawyers have begun their quest and the hackers have been using it for World of Warcraft purposes, and like the 5th Horseman (of the Apocalypse)(who left before the group got famous), the crap will really hit the fan when the engineers arrive. LOL Incidentally, even macs are not spared in this and a former Apple exec's views on this matter.

a good number of links came from Boing boing, a great resource

While on the subject of nonsensical ranting and to provide a local flavour, i wonder if there is an issue of copyright regarding the white elephant T-shirts? LOL Mr Wang provided insightful thoughts (as usual) on this subject that are worth a read.

In further IP related news (i'm really on a roll today), a situation worthy of any Monty Python show. Update: this post by IP Kat speaks more of it and includes a picture of the disputed TM.

The rather shaky bridge between the companies and the consumers has been rattled. Will there be a Black Knight who will come forth to impede this link?

Segregation

Ever notice how segregation occurs around us everyday? Whether it's by race, colour, creed, religion, gender or even height, it is still a form of prejudice. I cannot help but feel this way especially during lunchtime, when certain groups of people would only eat with people within their group. Sometimes it is not because they are being elitist or exclusive, but it is just circumstances that bond them together. Then there are the nomads, people with no specific lunchgroup, like me. =) I tend to lunch with whoever's around at feeding time, and the great thing is, i always learn something new, whether it be the latest car mechanical thingamagic to great places to eat, or just about family.

In a previous workplace, there was no such distinction, all across the teams and admin staff, we were all equals when it came to lunch time in the common tearoom, united by the common goal of filling our tummys. And due to my varying lunchtime habit, i would eat at various times, thus getting to know people i wouldn't have met, like someone from the corner office of the floor below, or the person running the desk at reception (something i've always been shielded from doing 'cos of my lack of people skills lol). One day i would be trading muffin recipes with a lady from another team, another day i would be playing chess with a guy from another floor, otherwise bonding with the guys (from various teams). Sigh, why is it that i feel more alienated in a multi-cultural society?

MP3 player review

Armed with the view of wanting to get an MP3 player sometime, as opposed to getting a really big mobile music player (ie a car LOL), i have looked around, but am still quite confused. Here's a review of the existing players out there for those who like their music on the move. =)

How bizarre

Read this story from Boingboing and couldn't help linking it. It is a really interesting story about how efforts to 'control piracy' are being used as a corporate bargaining chip. In the end, it is us, the consumers, who suffer.

Btw, the title of this post is a song by a Kiwi group called OMC (or the Otara Millionaire's Club) and it was their one hit. How bizarre indeed.

mad about words

Dear whoever's reading this,

I wish to lay a complaint against one zeenie (for doing unspeakable stuff) and wibblewamble (for encouraging him).

Something zeenie does everyday is to drop by wibblewamble's office on his way home from work each day, since he stays in the east, works in the west, and wibblewamble works (til late) in the city. Sometimes they would have dinner before he heads home, but he usually ends up waiting for her to finish up what she's doing (work never ends). This is when i get violated and abused. What I don't understand is, why does he have to spoil my nice white complexion by writing on me?!? I mean, you won't believe the crap he writes, like

"Fragrant food always tastes good
when eaten daily
amongst friends and family."

or even

"Eat food
so good
when, now?
work how?"

yes, i can tell that he gets hungry waiting for her but does he have to write such drivel on me? I mean, come on, who the hell would understand:

"Is is never about luck
just the cards that you have
use what you know and succeed."

and it just goes from cryptic:

"Fear not the unknown
bear and smile
the light will be shown."

to plain silly:

"This is a Haiku attack!
no rhyme nor reason
just short and simple phrases."

Is it too much to ask that he leaves me alone?

yours sincerely,

wibblewamble's white board

Speeling Bee

Went for dinner with zeenie last Friday at a fairly well-known Chinese restaurant, and was appalled to discover that the menu had an item called "Beancrud"! That just about ranks up there with the stuff on www.engrish.com (today's Engrish of the day is "poopularity")...

Movie review

We watched Transporter 2 over the weekend and it was entertaining. At least up to the point where you park your brain by the door before entering the cinema. It seemed like an extra long advert for Audi (the A8, what a gorgeous car) at times, but still enjoyable, and in defence of the storyline, he did jump into a lambo that he stole afterwards while a taxi driver he was with got the porche, quite funky seeing a yellow porche with a 'taxi' sign on it. i wonder if it has that GPS thingmajig that some taxi drivers like to fiddle with, but i digress.

I like watching Jason Statham 'cos he seems to have an earnest outlook and while his acting may be a little wooden at times, let's face it, you don't really need to have a face of a thousand expressions to act out the role. I guess I still have his role in Snatch in mind when i watched it. Incidentally, there was also another actor from a Guy Ritchie film who featured prominently. Jason Flemyng from Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels (what a great show).

Watch it, but suspend reality before doing so. =)

surreal experience

As usual, the link-master has put up a whole list of distractions for our viewing pleasure and as usual i was entertained, but more so than usual. I opened most of the links via Firefox's tabbed browsing feature and was happily listening to the Bhangar-ed Twinkle twinkle little star while laughing about people's parking and marvelling at the laser slingshot (ah, the memories of having one when i was younger, thanks dad!).

I was thinking then "Wah, quite cool ah, i never knew Bhangra can mix with Dave Grusin's Charlie Brown Theme...... wait a min, how come the Charlie Brown Theme still going on and the guy has stopped yelling singing. Turns out that the Charlie Brown's theme was being played by the laser slingshot website and was totally unrelated (until lancerlord linked them on the same page) to each other. Talk about music mixing via the internet!

Ever notice?

That not many blogs reported about Michelle Wie's turning pro at age 16? And none reported about the incident at the seventh hole on Saturday at the Samsung World Championship at the weekend.

From ST:
"Basically what happened was her ball landed in a bush (i can hear the jokes already about that one) at the 470 yard par 5 seventh hole on Saturday. As she could not hit the ball, she took an unplayable lie, that allowed her to drop the ball away from the bush, at the same time it is illegal to move the ball to a position closer to the hole. She used her driver to measure the maximum two club-lengths for a drop and then chipped to 15 feet to make par.

On Sunday, after receiving reporter Michael Bamberger's complaint, rules officials Jim Haley and Robert O. Smith took Wie and caddie Greg Johnston back to the seventh green.

They used string to measure the distance between the hole and the spot where Wie's ball originally was and then where she dropped it.

It was then that she was adjudged to have been guilty of an infringement because 'the ball was closer to the hole by 12 to 18 inches', according to Smith.

Regardless of Wie's claim that it was only 'three inches' closer, it was still closer, which is against the rules of golf.

If Bamberger had reported the incident before she signed her scorecard on Saturday, she would have been hit with a two-stroke penalty, giving her a seven on that hole.

But, because he reported it only on Sunday, she was disqualified for signing a scorecard with the wrong score."

So how? The reporter is pretty much in the unenviable position of damned either way whether do or don't, although in this case it's also damned for taking his time to do it. It did reek abit of prejudicial treatment, but nair mind lah, she so young. Like PAP say, got more good years ahead.

zeenie dun play golf though, too slow and expensive for him and golf courses never let his caddy in the club. Not just because she's female but also because she's his doggie, jeanie. =) She's quite proud that she's never lost a ball when he played into the rough (quite often) and often shouts 'fore' for him (not her fault that not everyone can understand). Golf courses are specie-ist! Grrrr...

I popped away but locked my computer first and when i came back, found that my computer had restarted. Lost my document and no way to recover it. I really hate this intrusive piece of crap sometimes.

MechWarriors

Came across this at Neogentronyx.com - Introducing the world's first real Mecha and it reminded me of the scene from Alien (man, was it that long ago?) as well as Dave, even though the latter one was a static version (i caught a fish this big!). =)

Hmmmm, both movies have Sigourney Weaver in it, strange coincidence. Any other instances of mechanical contrivances that you can strap on (terminator and robocop not counted ah).

censorship

Saw this from Boing Boing, who incidentally has a funny way of 'removing' material, by using a strikeout only that the link is still there!

Nice to know our tiny lil island is up there with the big nations. The words censorship and internet just cannot exist in the same sentence, let alone the same thought. Sigh.

In other news, I is back from exams (dun worry, not test of engrish), kinda drained but relieved at the same time (even though failure beckons lol), busy reading all the stuff that people have posted in the past week. One post from Jay-walk stood out though, 'cos of my current state. Had a few celebratory drinks after the exams yesterday and was pretty buzzed until i got home and then did the Merlion. LOL. I wish somebody would stop spinning the room, would like to get off now. Man, what a great night out, was introduced to the pub Insomnia at Chijmes, which had a great live band and sang myself hoarse. Anyone remember the song 'Two princes' by Spin Doctors? It really brings back the memories, i remember then CDs were just beginning to be affordable and popular. Apologies to Wibblewamble for shouting the words into her ear, but i just couldn't help myself! LOL For the rest of you who missed my yelling singing the lyrics as follows.

Two Princes

One, two, princes kneel before you
(that's what I said, now)
Princes, Princes who adore you
(Just go ahead, now)
One has diamonds in his pockets
(that's some bread, now)
This one, he wants to buy you rockets
(Ain't in his head, now)

This one, he got a princely racket
(That's what I said, now)
Got some big seal upon his jacket
(Ain't in his head, now)
Marry him, your father will condone you
(how bout that, now)
Marry me, your father will disown you
(he'll eat his hat, now)

Aww, marry him or marry me,
I'm the one that loves you baby can't you see?
Ain't got no future or a family tree,
But I know what a prince and lover ought to be,
I know what a prince and lover ought to be....

Said, if you want to call me baby
(Just go ahead, now)
An' if you want to tell me maybe
(Just go ahead, now)
If you wanna buy me flowers
(Just go ahead, now)
And if you want to talk for hours
(Just go ahead, now)

criminally insane

I was reading this article via Boing Boing:
Soldier tried fake mouth-bomb in heist
and it reminded me of a story i read once about a dumb criminal who tried to rob the Bank of America with a note written on a Wells Fargo withdrawal slip (or was it the other way round? lol), which led me to an even funnier story about a dumber criminal at the bottom of the page. Ahh, the wonders of the internet. Here's the link and God Bless Americans for providing humour.

What the heck, i shall reproduce it (the funnier one) here:

Florida: A thief burst into the bank one day wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Aiming his gun at the guard, the thief yelled, "FREEZE, MOTHER-STICKERS, THIS IS A F***UP!" For a moment, everyone was silent. Then the snickers started. The guard completely lost it and doubled over laughing. It probably saved his life, because he'd been about to draw his gun. He couldn't have drawn and fired before the thief got him.
The thief ran away and is still at large. In memory of the event, the bank later put a plaque on the wall engraved "Freeze, mother-stickers, this is a f***up!"

liveability survey

Vancouver tops liveability ranking according to a new survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit

Well, our sunny lil' island ain't too far off. Little crime, stable society, good trasport infrastructure, wide varieties (of food, shopping etc), low tax, random sightings of white elephants, high tech environment, what more could we ask for right? LOL

who copies the copiers?

Reading this article, Artists take stand against copy protection, i am left wondering as to whether to buy an ipod. The way i see it, the ones who suffer the most are the music artists (and the profits, lol) that the record labels are 'trying' to protect.

If you're wondering about the weird title, it's from the latin saying
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who guards the guardians?) Indeed.

warning....

The next few weeks are going to be rather hectic for me, as i'm taking my exams, so posts may be sporadic and few.

Before i hit the books (preferably with a large baseball bat "take that!"), i did come across something which made me fall out of my chair (you can go figure out why, too bleah to say anything about it lol). Dun say i didn't warn you ah!

Catch you guys around.

snippets of conversation

Funny things i have heard today:

Colleague: Do you have hair gel?
zeenie: *train of thought along the lines of There's something about Mary* yes but i ain't sharing 'cos i've got a headache lah.... or even yes but tired lah dunno whether can generate enough but instead said out loud "Nope, sorry"

Over lunch when dessert of almond jelly with lychee and a cherry was served:
Colleague2: Do you want to take my cherry?
zeenie: *bites lips in order to desist from even thinking about any flippant comment*

It's not that i want to make fun of people or say stupid things (that amuses me) but sometimes, it's really too easy. Somehow, the phrase from Spiderman came to mind:
"With great power comes great responsibility..."

With that in mind, i would also like to say, keep safe, be well and above all, blog responsibly.... you never know when something might come back and bite you (like this quote from me that i just saw. yikes!) and tiny us even managed to make the news way down under in Aoteroa. And so the discreditation continues.

Have a good weekend y'all...

Can't stop listening

~ The Rasmus ~
Driving me absolutely nuts how i can't get enough of their 'Dead Letters' album, such that i hear and enjoy their song in my head even when i'm not listening to the album.

The lyrics sometimes dun make sense though, but who cares, the music just rocks! I wonder what their new album "Hide from the Sun" is like though.

At last!

I did something unprecedented today, thanks to the IEEE Annual Elections. I voted! =) It was by post, but it did feel like i was participating in something worthwhile, so worthwhile that it made the papercut on my tongue (when i licked the envelope (disgusting habit i know)) worthwhile too.

I'm the....

Due to the many requests to do this..... ok i exaggerate, due to the one request from Jaywalk to do this, zeenie gives in and contributes the following:

I’m the blogger who thought he’d never do memes ever
I’m the blogger who can sit around all day and wonder
I’m the blogger who sees a great concept and asks how
I’m the blogger who thinks dogs are worth talking to
I’m the blogger who has but memories to keep
I’m the blogger who is thankful for you
I’m the blogger who follows the writings of other bloggers
I’m the blogger who is never too busy
I’m the blogger who loves reading
I’m the blogger who used to eat anything
I'm the blogger who loves the word when written
I'm the blogger who doesn't earn much and just gets by
I’m the blogger who is zeenie?

Now just read the last word of each sentence =)

Check out the more elegant, well-written and touching responses *sniff* that other people have written via Tomorrow.

jeanie's busy weekend

Woof! zeenie too busy, so asked me to blog about a dog's life. Fighting the urge to revert to using growls and arooos but he told me his readers dun really understand that.
Went out somewhere far in the morning by car, and met some other dogs. Didn't really think much of them, except that snooty Golden Retriever, but i showed him some teeth and he backed off. Bow wow down to me!

Then we went to some gardens in the city that was very nice, called botai boten arrrooah gardens (in dog language). It had wide open spaces and a stage (which i didn't like 'cos of the echo). Met some more dogs at the dog-friendly cafe there and i got to eat abit of the mushroom swiss burger zeenie was having, as well as the fries. YUM!!

Went to visit Snowy the Husky at Bukit Timah, but Snowy was busy having her hair done, but i did leave a message there. zeenie wasn't too happy about it, said something about carefully manicured gardens and too much nutrients at one spot, but i didn't care, who ask him ask me drink so much water? If it's flat and green, it's free game for a quick whizz!

Then went to Wibblewamble's place to visit her family, very cooling place. I nearly fell asleep there, so comfortable, especially with all the petting and the rubbing. Hard work being so adorably cute, but someone has to do it! =) Finally got home and napped the rest of the day, woke up and had dinner and slept some more, and went out for walkies, slept and ta-dah, another new day! Woof!

Oh, and on Friday he came back late 'cos of some movie he watched, called the myth (some trivia here). I dunno why he spend money to hear fairytale, he could have stayed home to listen to me, i've got some real cool stories like grrrr, woah woah, woof sit aroooo and my favourite, blah-blah walkies!

I think i won't do this too often, very tiring typing with two paws, keeping having typos (stupid small keyboard made for human hands. keyboard manufacturers are specie-ist!) so until next time, arrroooooo, WOOOF!

Nevertheless, a cool way to put a point across.

Songs backwards!

All you wanted to know about music played backwards
(via Hangyong)
I've always wondered about this, and now i'm not sure i really wanted to know at all. Freak shit, do not click if easily spooked!!
I was, on the other hand, amused by britney's and pink floyd's songs. LOL

meetings and more

I had a strange thought recently when i attended a meeting. From young, i was taught the chinese way of showing respect for one's elders (non-relative) by calling them 'uncle' or 'auntie', but at what point do we go from addressing them as such and calling them by their name during a meeting? Most of the people at the conference table were older than me and it felt a little weird to just call them by their name and talk to them as if we were equals. Did this change occur when i received my degree? Or when i hit the magic age of *insert age here*?
(i did say it was a strange thought, LOL)

Overheard about scheduling this meeting:
A: Erm, i think some people cannot make it, but you can go ahead and give your presentation.
B: Should we reschedule the meeting instead?
A: Cannot lah, so late already (Ed: 2 hours to the meeting), i dunno if they will check their email.
B: Oh, ok, we'll just carry on then.
A: So confirm you're giving the presentation then? I will go email them about it.
B: .......

**********************

In a seperate meeting, i found out that one of the guys i've been meeting actually remembers me from junior college. He was from the next class and recalled me as "the one sitting on the left near the piano in the lecture theatres" (something i can't remember actually, i thought i sat all over the place (including under the tables onces for a quick nap)). Small world.

Jeanie photo!

Jeanie at the Beach Park
Originally uploaded by zeenie.

As it's been some time since i put up a picture of jeanie.

I think that objectively, she's such a great looking dog (being biased, i would have said that she's the most beautifullest adorable, cutest dog in the world), and we couldn't help but make comparisons to the other border collies we saw on Sat. She seems to be built differently and the fur on the back of her head is much softer. The difference between NZ and Aussie BCs i guess. Incidentally, she was the only female in the group and the guys were pretty much falling all over her (sometimes aided by slaps from her paw here and there LOL).

Cinderella Man

Watched this last night, i have to say it was quite good. RC is a good actor and i came out of it feeling thankful for three things:
1) that i'm not living in the time of the great depression
2) that i'm not making a living as a boxer
3) that i have some who loves and supports me just as much (*mwaks* WW)

It also had some great one-liners. Go watch it. =)

Quote:
Jim Braddock: For two hundred and fifty dollars I would fight your wife!
Joe Gould: Now you're dreaming
Jim Braddock: ...and your grandmother, at the same time.
Joe Gould: Teeth in or teeth out?
Jim Braddock: Take 'em out!
Joe Gould: Then you're dead, you're down, you're gone, no chance!

just to vote

An interesting story about a guy who was caught speeding, crashed into two parked cars and a fence and then, he walked home, but not before casting his vote at a polling booth at the recent NZ general elections. What would we give to excercise our voting rights?

which reminds me, zeenie's random 3 facts (thanks to mr moron, grrr):
List three random facts about yourself that your friends might not know. And then tag five other friends to do it.
1) zeenie has never voted before.
2) zeenie can't wait to vote.
3) zeenie once got voted chess club president.
and just because i'm a nice guy (and to state the painfully obvious fact)
4) zeenie really doesn't like doing these things. LOL

i shall let people just volunteer to do this lah, i very democratic one.

(yes jay, i still owe you that se7en meme, still compiling my list of answers and will see what i can come up with!)

flyball

After a six month hiatus from flyball, me and jeanie returned to the world of running in the straight line, jumping over several obstacles in the process before hitting a pedal on a box (for jeanie, for me just u-turn and run back) to trigger a ball launch, catch the ball (again for jeanie) and run back going through said obstacles. It is actually more fun that i describe it out to be, or at least more fun in my memory, but that's just due to the chaos of the area.
Speaking of memories, i found it quite cool that jeanie could still remember how to trigger a pedal or to target a target (sorry, couldn't think of any other word) after all this time of not doing it. She definitely enjoyed it, now if only her owner could decide what he wants her to do, that would make life easier.
disclaimer: said owner was busy trying to understand the long list of instructions being given lah.
Might do it again, but probably we'll just buy our own flyball box and do it ourselves. Got plans, will saw (and fabricate). LOL

men in black

Back then, i blogged about the NZ badminton team, well now the IBF has "poured cold water on the idea". Stuff: Black Cocks name being reconsidered

I don't even want to know what their bowling team is called. *facepalm*

Famous

Thanks this article by Miyagi on Today. Does this mean i have been today-ed?

Wow, i wonder if this is going to change the number of readers from 5 to oh-my-god-please-dun-sue-me? Should i change my writing style and sprout banal boring stuff that would offend no one? Nah, i don't think so, shall maintain my one-step-above-banal-boring-stuff style (sorry, i am that boring lol).

However.....

righto, now that i'm famous, there's going to be some changes around here, starting from now....
1. each reader is to offer doggie biscuits for reading each post to her royal highness Princess Jeanie.
2. zeenie shall refer to zeenie in the third person form, no more using plain ole 'i' or 'me'.
3.
3.
3. erm, how embarrassing, I zeenie can't seem to think of anymore things to add to my list of demands... so much for that... LOL

On a more serious note, i wonder how many people will actually type out the link from Today?
I shall be garang abit and make a sweeping statement here (quite unlike a Singaporean, i know) i say that i will get less than 10 hits from Today referrals. So if you're here because you read about my blog from Today, please yell out and prove me rightwrong!

5000 hits

Woot! I'd like to thank all of you (yes, total number 5) for making at least a thousand visits to my blog! (and hitting me a thousand times each? *ouch*) Woohoo!!
GRrr aroooooooooo (from jeanie).

Amazing photos

These photos of an Indycar crash are simply amazing!

And out of the two drivers, one walked away unassisted while the other was helped out of the car. Blows me away.

hmmm....

Two bloggers charged under Sedition Act over racist remarks (via CNA)
(update: CNA site might be down, alternative reproduction (copyright? LOL) by Cowboy Caleb)

I hope this does not set a dangerous precedent in many ways. The only time i've heard the word 'sedition' used was in Last of the Mohicans.

Cora Munro: Justice? If that's justice than the sooner French guns blow the English out of America the better it will be for the people here!
Colonel Munro: You do not know what you're saying, girl!
Cora Munro: Yes I do, I know exactly what what I'm saying, and if it is sedition, than I am guilty of sedition too!

They were of course referring to the actions of Hawkeye Le Long Carabine (he-who-sells-rifles-at-cut-rate-prices?), who had some great lines:

British Officer: You call yourself a patriot, and loyal subject to the Crown?
Hawkeye: I do not call myself subject to much at all.

I doubt that this would lead to the last of the bloggers or last of the racists for that matter. People will just be more wary of thinking out loud, and made aware that "foot in mouth (in public) leaves really bad taste."
Sorry about that one, couldn't help myself, and i shan't launch into a whole list of those confucious say jokes (you can click on the link or google it yourself). =)

For all of Jeanie's fans, i apologise for the delay in blogging about her.

That aside, i'm happy to report that Jeanie has settled in quite well here in Singapore and has adapted herself to the climate here. She has shed quite a bit of fur in the last two months, but i see it ending soon.

Although she was born on a farm, from working border collies, i always suspected that she was a city dog. Even in Wellington, she loved going into the city, walking along the harbour, sitting by my chair while i had a coffee, going around being hugged by random strangers, etc. So she has had no problems (so far, touch wood) settling into the city of concrete and glass that i call home.

We will be joining a flyball club so that she remains active, although i will watch out for her since she is technically a senior citizen at the grand old age of 7 years old. =)

Stay tuned for updates!

mindgames

This is really weird.
I have no idea how it works, but i proved that i'm average. Dunno whether to be happy or sad about my averageness, and tried to reassure myself with "Don't worry zeenie, you're unique, just like everybody else" .....

Enneagram Test

Enneagram
free enneagram test

via G.E.E.K

Kind of an interesting test but the questions were kinda weird.
Update: i didn't know they had the detailed results! (via crufty)

Basic Fear: That they have no identity or personal significance
Basic Desire: To find themselves and their significance (to create an identity)

Healthy: Self-aware, introspective, on the "search for self," aware of feelings and inner impulses. Sensitive and intuitive both to self and others: gentle, tactful, compassionate. / Highly personal, individualistic, "true to self." Self-revealing, emotionally honest, humane. Ironic view of self and life: can be serious and funny, vulnerable and emotionally strong. At Their Best: Profoundly creative, expressing the personal and the universal, possibly in a work of art. Inspired, self-renewing and regenerating: able to transform all their experiences into something valuable: self-creative.

Average: Take an artistic, romantic orientation to life, creating a beautiful, aesthetic environment to cultivate and prolong personal feelings. Heighten reality through fantasy, passionate feelings, and the imagination. / To stay in touch with feelings, they interiorize everything, taking everything personally, but become self-absorbed and introverted, moody and hypersensitive, shy and self-conscious, unable to be spontaneous or to "get out of themselves." Stay withdrawn to protect their self-image and to buy time to sort out feelings. / Gradually think that they are different from others, and feel that they are exempt from living as everyone else does. They become melancholy dreamers, disdainful, decadent, and sensual, living in a fantasy world. Self-pity and envy of others leads to self-indulgence, and to becoming increasingly impractical, unproductive, effete, and precious.

Unhealthy: When dreams fail, become self-inhibiting and angry at self, depressed and alienated from self and others, blocked and emotionally paralyzed. Ashamed of self, fatigued and unable to function. / Tormented by delusional self-contempt, self-reproaches, self-hatred, and morbid thoughts: everything is a source of torment. Blaming others, they drive away anyone who tries to help them. / Despairing, feel hopeless and become self-destructive, possibly abusing alcohol or drugs to escape. In the extreme: emotional breakdown or suicide is likely. Generally corresponds to the Avoidant, Depressive, and Narcissistic personality disorders.

Key Motivations: Want to express themselves and their individuality, to create and surround themselves with beauty, to maintain certain moods and feelings, to withdraw to protect their self-image, to take care of emotional needs before attending to anything else, to attract a "rescuer".

Examples: Ingmar Bergman, Alan Watts, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morrisette, Paul Simon, Jeremy Irons, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Fiennes, Martha Graham, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Johnny Depp, Anne Rice, Rudolph Nureyev, J.D. Salinger, Anaîs Nin, Marcel Proust, Maria Callas, Tennessee Williams, Edgar Allan Poe, Annie Lennox, Prince, Michael Jackson, Virginia Woolf, Judy Garland, "Blanche DuBois" (Streetcar Named Desire).

Chinese Fortune Telling website

Quite cool, this website just needs your date and time of birth and viola! Instant prediction! (via Lillight *waves hello*)

Mine is:

一身骨肉最清高
早入黉门姓氏标
待到年将三十六
蓝袍脱去换红袍

In my case, it just caused confusion 'cos i dun understand it.
I tried feeding it to Babelfish but it sprouted something even more confusing:

Body flesh and blood most aloof from worldly affairs
early enters 黉 the gate surname sign to
treat to the year takes off 36
blue gowns trades the red gown

What the heow? What's this about gowns?

Update: EGADS! WW filled in her birth details and got exactly the same results!! Yet one more freaky thing.

blogger meetup

Did something i had never done before, never thought that i would do it either, yes, i gave in and did it. I will not be gushing about it though, and for those of you who were there, it was great to put a face to the blogname. =)

CBTL power!

CBTL power!
Originally uploaded by zeenie.

I had wanted to this post along the lines of cowboy caleb's daily linkorama, especially since he's a starbucks fan. But i gave up 'cos i dun have the time to go list out the links like he did. So consider this a mini-tribute (or smack in the face for all starbucks fans) to coffee drinkers...

Of all the crates showing alongside the CBTL logo, this one stood out. Now i know why their drinks so powderful lor. LOL

7th month

Was reading this article by Idle Days and it made me think of my dog. You see, jeanie has been acting kind strange lately, barking at apparent nothingness when we go out for walkies with her stare is directed to a single area, or hiding out in the toilet to stare at the wall, or using her body to prevent us from going to certain areas when we walk.
Definitely something fishy, and I guess she can sense things better than us humans. Which brings us to the next point, how come this never happened in NZ? Do supernatural beings there abide by a different set of rules and dun have seventh month? The closest day i can think of is ANZAC day, when the war dead are remembered...strange.

zeenie's day

Went to Baize last night, like third time in a week liao. Can't seem to get enough of the place! They had a good three piece jazz band playing and the environment for playing was quite cool (aside from noisy boisterous people next table).

Had a moment of hilarity when our drinks came though. I ordered a southern peach (southern comfort and peach schnapps) and noticed that it didn't come with a cherry as it usually did. So i asked the waitress for it, because i knew how much WW liked them.
WW: What did you ask that waitress about?
Me: I asked for your cherry.

Talk about not thinking before talking! Egads. Malu man.

In other news, i was at Singapore Pools today donating money (often buy, seldom win) when i noted that they should really rename the establishment in view of what they offer. Since they actually sell Hope, Thrills and Passion as opposed to the conventional names of Toto, 4-D and Sports Bets.

enjoy your weekend!

i can't bear to think about this

Anti rape condom. Ouch! "A South African inventor has unveiled a new anti-rape female condom that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world."

Burglar tries to break into cop's house

Amazing. Reminds of the time a friend of mine had a wee bit too much to drink and tried to open the door of the nearest car, which was (you guessed it) a cop car, with two cops sitting in it. LOL

darwin honourable mentions

Not such a bright idea

"With petrol prices rocketing, two Hastings men decided it would be cheaper to steal some petrol and headed to Black Burn Farm near Waipawa at 2am yesterday to do just that.

All went well till one of the duo flicked on a lighter to see how the siphoning was going. The car promptly went up in flames and the pair had all the light they needed."

Facinating stuff.

One more chance

Is it just me or does the english title of Jack Neo's latest film translated funnily from the mandarin title? I suppose they didn't want to confuse people with movies like 3 men and a baby or a few good men. hmmmmm.

*********

zeenie's corny comment of the weekend:

ww: are you a jaywalker?
me: of course, and a really good walker too! at least according to jeanie.
ww: .......

i'm terrible.

painful wiki entry

Just when you thought nothing more painful could come out of China.

odd stuff

Belgian women soccer team loses 50-1.

Sounds more like a cricket score than soccer!

House of Tan Yeok Nee - a photoset on Flickr

As promised, some photos from our seminar venue.

A very impressive place which highlighted the wealth of someone from way back. Really cool stuff, wish my grandparent's place was still around, afterall it was designed and built by my grandfather. Unfortunately, that entire 'village' of houses which housed a significant portion of the clan was demolished to make way for HDB flats. Oh well, the price of progress i guess.

zeenie away

Will be away at a seminar here for the next few days. What struck me was the location, as i've walked by, driven by and passed by this place so many times, yet never knew it looked so good inside. Promise to post pictures of the very well-done interior soon.

Why women live longer than men.

A photo contest.

Now you know why!

more odd stuff

Cactus man got spiked?: "A cactus and succulent expert allegedly poisoned by his Malaysian fiancee to slow his sex drive is upset by reports that he demanded sex from her up to 35 times a week."

There's such thing as a cactus and succulent expert?

And what is it with Caucasian men and Asian women? Relationships of the opposite pairing (Asian men and Caucasian woman) are so much more rare, i wonder if there is any reason for this?

Still on NZ, sometimes their justice system reminds me of Hogan's Heroes, especially with the comedy that recently happened.

In tribute to the Ashes series going on now in England, a game to keep you company for the weekend. Enjoy!

stuff

tree sapling prevented from entering country: "TAIPEI: A sapling from a Sri Lankan bodhi tree deeply revered by Buddhists has at last made it into Taiwan after being rejected by quarantine authorities for fear of parasites."

Away

Been down with food poisoning (again) and it's been hell trying to get back into the groove of work, especially with all the backlog. Work does not stop for you. Sigh

All that funny material out there from the usual suspects should keep you pretty busy anyways, but if you're free, try out this scribble game and see what you can come up with!

Funny!

I was reading this and trying to stifle my laughter: Legend of the BloodNinja

Link via mr brown who got it from Alex Blagg.

The Animal Quiz

more silly questions! Really reminded of the movie Ice Age (loved it), which incidentally has a sequel coming up!

You're a Wooly Mammoth!

A little heavy and a lot shaggy, you move a little slower than the world around you. You definitely wish global warming would go away, and maybe even reverse itself a bit. You like long walks on the ice floe, and could even get stuck there without minding too much. Your favorite Sesame Street character is Snuffleupagus. Beware of tar pits... although you really didn't need to be told that, did you?

Take the Animal Quiz at the Blue Pyramid.

Singlish according to Wikipedia

Holy smokes! Came across this detailed description on Wikipedia. Someone has too much time methinks.

transform my days...

Came across this page: The ultimate Transformers: Binaltech/Alternators resource page! and made me think of days gone by. It's really cool as they have updated the characters with new cars like the WRX, Dodge Viper, RX-8 (my fav) and more. Costs quite abit though, so start saving!

another quiz

The Country Quiz, by BluePyramid InterActive (props to Ben)

You're Ireland!

Mystical and rain-soaked, you remain mysterious to many people, and this
makes you intriguing.  You also like a good night at the pub, though many are just as
worried that you will blow up the pub as drink your beverage of choice.  You're good
with words, remarkably lucky, and know and enjoy at least fifteen ways of eating a potato.
 You really don't like snakes.

Take the Country Quiz at
the Blue Pyramid

Quite true actually.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You? (props to crufty and ben)

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

Elrond

A stern yet benevolent organizer who often knows best, your wits are keenly fixed on aiding efforts you deem worthy.

Now at this last we must take a hard road, a road unforseen. There lies our hope, if hope it be. To walk into peril to Mordor.

I am an Elf! I am immortal (who speaks like Agent Smith)!! Woohoo!!

update... wibblewamble's results:

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

Galadriel

Possessing a rare combination of wisdom and humility, while serenely dominating your environment you selflessly use your powers to care for others.

Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

Evo IX Wagon

STUFF : MOTORING - :
"Mitsubishi's latest Evo is set to put the boot in with the imminent launch of the Lancer Evolution IX wagon."

That just blows me away..... i've always been partial to wagons, thanks to my doggy, now i can have the best of both worlds. *rubs hands in glee* heh heh heh

Millau Viaduct - France - Cable-Stayed Bridge

A really cool bridge.

Lotsa cool links and information regarding the World's highest (tallest) bridge.

This should be enough to bridge the gap of inactivity on this blog while i (we) go on holiday! =) (sigh, lame i know, the best i could come up with)
Yes, i know everyone's going on holiday too so happy holidays and safe journey!!

I recall a time when as a post grad, i would be so grateful and happy for public holidays, 'cos that would mean that uni would be empty and i could do my stuff in peace without being bothered. *marvels at my geekiness then*

In the spirit of the title of this blog (ok, only vaguely related), here's something extra that's really cool... presenting, the Killer Bean.

ROAD TESTS

A review from NZ, appropriate and interesting, Singaporeans should avoid looking at the price otherwise feel damn heart pain man...... we pay double for nothing. I especially like the jibe about the STi. LOL
STUFF : MOTORING ::
"The new Mitsubishi Evolution Lancer IX and the not-quite-so-new BMW M3 CSL are cars for nutters. They appeal to the most basic of human instincts, the most primal of our urges, and the quickest of the body's reflexes...... "

mrt blues

I've always maintained that if you want interesting things to see, you have to look no further than our mrt rides. Why just this morning, something interesting happened to me on the way to work... LOL

*rant*
to the woman who was sitting on my right this morning, if you could open your eyes, you would see that i am already squashed up against the fat well-endowed woman on my left, yet i've managed to stay within the boundaries of my seat. I recognise that you too have a fat well-endowed woman on the other side (your right), who was also enroaching on your space, BUT do you have to keep looking at the tiny gap between us and keep clucking your tongue? If it is a medical condition that causes you to keep making such "tsk" noises, it can't be healthy and i suggest you see a specialst about it. i could suggest one, only that you'd probably have to take the mrt there too.
*rant end*

Thinking about it, my theory now is that she is a JK Rowling fan who hated me because i was reading this book by Terry. LOL

Damn i need a car.

km8 review

Went to Sentosa to pick up WW on Sat, after she attended a wedding there (not hers lah!). Being a typical S'porean, i thought must make full use of the 4 dollah entry that i had to pay, so we hung out at some of the bars there.
The first place was really cool and had great music consisting of a guy with a laptop (and other assorted electronic gadgets) and a singer, saxphonist, and guitarist. Jazzy chill-out music, i likee. Turns out a famous blogger was there with a companion too!

After they finished their set (i thought i heard the song "Lovely day" mixed somewhere in it), we went over to Tanjong Beach, purely for sentimental reasons, but found that they had demolished our special spot. In its place: KM8:
"A new beach bar called Km8 tucked away in Sentosa's Tanjong Beach comes close enough, going by the crowds that throng the 5,000sq ft set-up on weekends."

It was quite a nice place (see other reviews here), the drinks were affordable and the snacks were crispy (chicken wings). We counted the stars and imagined the clouds, while laying on the spacious deck chairs in the gloom of midnight. A candle beside us illuminated the drinks, but aside from its tiny flame, our surroundings were a mixture of shadows and darkness, very lomantic hor?

Definitely go back again, especially later in the night, just to chill and space out.
