honeymoon in Italy 1
We did manage to visit quite a few places in Italy and took quite a few pictures. There were some places where photography was not allowed so we could have taken more! This is the impressive Duomo in Milan which took ages to build, resulting in a mishmash of architecture from different periods.
Our overall impression of Italy was that it is a beautiful place, with such a rich history and strong culture (and good food!). However, there is something seriously wrong with their society when we (as tourists) have to deal with people who a) do not do their jobs (lazy); b) try not to do their jobs by pushing the buck; c) can't be bothered to do their jobs; d) unhappy with doing their jobs and take it out on you. More on this as we go on.
Merry Christmas!
Just wanted to wish everyone reading this a very Merry Christmas and (just in case i don't have time to write any further) a Happy New Year!

Wedding
Wibblewamble and zeenie have been busy so it's left to me to say a few words. Woof woof aroo ruff woof! Which roughly translates to: may you both have a happy life together filled with laughter, joy and love! (and tennis balls! gotta have tennis balls!)
I hope they appreciate the effort i put in to look this good, i even had to challenge a terrier after he made some disparaging remarks at us!

Book book meme meme
According to the meme:
i. Grab the nearest book.
ii. Open the book to page 123.
iii. Find the fifth sentence.
iv. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
v. Don't search around and look for the "coolest" book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.
Here's mine:
I have estimated how many letters there are in the Encyclopaedia, and I have assumed that each of my 24 million books is as big as an Encyclopaedia volume, and have calculated, then, how many bits of information there are (10^15).
From "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out" (damn cheong hei man, i type and retype dunno how many times, and still dunno how to represent 10 to the power of 15. 10E+15?)

Wedding prep IV: going postal
It was not until i've had to send out our invites that i've realised the lack of postboxes there days. Went round and round looking for somewhere to post the letters but no luck. Maybe the advent of electronic mail has caused snail mail to wade through the dead sea (dun ask me where that came from), thus postboxes have become a rarity. Why dun you count the number of these endangered species today and let us know?

Wedding prep III: invites
One more step forward today, the printers called to say the inserts were ready so we rushed down during lunch to collect. Unfortunately, we neglected to notice that our lunch time was also their lunch time, so when we got there no one was in. So we went for lunch as well. Interestingly enough, smack in middle of this industrial were a whole row of shops selling cakes, snacks and kuehs. And we bought a glorious durian ondeh from a nonya shop. Went back to the printers and there were people there now. We had a quick last min check and all was well! This outfit has been professional, courteous, and always aware of the deadlines involved. Kudos to them! Email me if you want their details.

Wedding Prep II: almost farcial facial
After wearing what looked like a moomoo (i spell it like that 'cos i looked like it was made for a cow), i got to lie down, which was good, since i was tired. Then came the cleansing, the steaming and the mask, which were ok as well, until the time came for the mask to come off. That's when i got comments like "wah so much?" "wah so fat one!" (hey! i resent that! i'm just slightly overweight!), "wah, super a lot leh!" (i kid you not) about my blackheads (and i was just getting attached to them that i've even named them...). So the long and the short of it is, now i've got a face that even an ant would have trouble getting a grip on as they'll just slide off my super smooth face. Note to self: must remember not to prop up my head with my hand since it might slip and i'll end up whacking my head against the table...
We had food tasting at 7 and had to fetch her grandma at 6.40 so told the people that we had to leave by half past 6. However, as we weren't wearing watches which announced the time, we lost track of time and were late. Dinner was ok though and what we saw was quite a professional outfit. Good on them, i think i feel like i can trust them not to screw up the event.

Thoughts at dawn
Seeing the break of a new morning (since when did a morning break? is anyone going to put it back together?) always triggers introspective thoughts and today, it was about our upcoming nuptials. Someone asked whether i was prepared, and i replied "not really..." and the person was shocked. But i explained on "because i've got a ton of things to sort out and Mr Murphy and his famous law are running amok."
"No, i meant are you ready to be married." clarified the person.
"Of course! I would marry her in a heartbeat." and thought to myself, what a weird question to ask. Looking back i guess for some, a marriage was always going to be iffy, but we were uniquely different (heh) and unconventional right from the start, and somehow we always knew we would be together. It was the journey there that was interesting, and it was this exploration of life with a constant companion that made for a wondrous trip.
Strange thoughts? Actually pretty par for the course. Lol.

Wedding prep I
Today, we went shopping! It was for all the various items required for the Guo Da Li, and since we are of different dialects, we had to come to an agreement as so what was required, as different dialects require different things. =)
First, we helped WW's mum at the chinese wedding shop. I have no idea what to call these shops so i'm just calling it that. There are several around Singapore, but in particular, there are a few grouped at Beauty World Shopping centre, following the Singaporean trend of "if there's a successful shop here, i must set up one that sells exactly the same thing". We got our stuff from a corner shop on the ground floor (dunno the name, the one beside HealthTech), after searching high and low for it, and it was quite worth it 'cos the kindly man running the shop was very nice and very helpful. WW's mum bought things like baby's bath tub, tea ceremony tea set, battery operated double happiness lamps (which looked like kerosene ones), sewing kit, wash basin, mirror ("dun let anyone else look into the mirror on the big day hor" was the advice given), talcum powder case (for baby)(dun ask), etc. The guy also sold red packets so we also got some of that, but had to say no to the rather gaudy looking red mug. We still need things like toothbrush, toothpaste, and WW's gotta get some white pajamas. Tomorrow is another day!
Went to Bugis to help my mum buy the dried goods to be sent as gifts to ww's family, this included dried oysters, dried abalone, dried red dates, white lotus root, dried scallops, dried longans, dried lychees, chestnuts, and some nuts. Lots of bargaining involved! No shark's fin or sea cucumber was required, so i didn't have any dilemmas ('cos i feel bad for one of them, and feel like i want to laugh at the other one).
We'll be borrowing a basket from her grandma, which would help us transport the various goodies (and look good at the same time), all we need is something blue according to Western tradition (something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue).
More updates to follow!

thoughts for the day
Been busy lately preparing for our big day and other stuff (like exams) that I hardly have time to write in here.
Recently I’ve been going through videographers, and I must say that there are some that are good, and there are some which are bad, despite being recommended by friends and whatnot. Then there are some who exude genuine passion for their job that I can’t help but admire them (even though some of their video styles doesn’t agree with us). Going through quite a few portfolios have also given us an insight into what other people go through on their wedding day, I just hope ours goes smoothly and that the weather is kind to us.
In world news, I note Burma is under internal strife at the moment, with the maroon-robed monks leading the way (ed: these are different from orange-robed monks (from China) who can open a can of Shaolinesque whoop-ass). I can’t help but think of a couple of monks who guided us around the pagoda in Rangoon, and wonder how they are doing. We did give them a small donation (one was planning to head overseas to study in a varsity), and wished them well, just as they wished us well. Sigh.

News of home from abroad
Is there some underlying reason why this wasn't published in our local MSM? I had a look through asiaone.com and didn't find anything on it. And the funny thing is that it was apparently reported in ST. I should check it out i guess. Anyways, the main gist of it is that a Singapore-based cargo forwarding company has been fined $S22,000 for trying to export missile parts to Iran without permission.
I can imagine the jokes already, like
"Excuse me sir, can i have you passport please? Oh, is that a missile in your pants or are you just happy to see me?"
Good on our boys in blue to catch the shipment.

Parking rant
So there we were yesterday at the mall looking for a place to park the car when we noticed the specimen of parallex error parking. Check it out! Not only is this clown encroaching into the neighbouring lot, but also sticking out enough to pose a danger to other cars. Wonderful example of selfish behavior, idiotic attitude and lousy parking skills, all in one!

book review: the Afghan
Overall, i was disappointed with the book. It may have the usual meticulous research and planning but some of it seems like a rehash from previous books. The main protagonist is from Fist of God, where quite a bit of background was laid down there. I haven't cross checked, but i'm sure they match up. Then there are things like the 'Afghan' training at Castle Forbes. Those who remember his other book Icon will also remember that Jason Monk trained there, and the caretaker and kitchen helpers are the same. His novels follow a trend of first the background information, then the in-between fill in stories, then the preparation, then the main climatic action scene. The background information was quite engaging but then fell flat as obvious as red herrings go, you could smell it coming (wth i'm writing about i have no idea, but that sounded better in my mind lol). The main climatic scene was set at sea, and while it was well described, it reminded me too much of one of his earlier books, Devil's Alternative. The ending itself seemed too PC and hardly a twist in the tale, more like a slight diversion to the fish & chip shop and thence the pub, almost as if you couldn't wait to get to the end, so it was all rather abrupt.
Quite disappointing really, his other books are really much much better. If you're not into the rather heavy research and "what if" scenarios, he did do some books with short stories, like No Comebacks and the Veteran. Surprisingly, he did quite a good love story in one of them.

z: who is the Chinese VIP?
ww: I dunno, no reports of the Chinese premier coming over
z: oh yeah, the newspapers didn’t say Hu is coming.
ww: well, if the newspapers said who is coming then we wouldn’t be asking now would we?
z: so Hu is the VIP?
ww: I dunno!
z: lol, we should get our own show/podcast, we’ll be hilarious
ww: only to us.
z: depends on who’s listening.
ww: don’t start that again……
Further funnies over the weekend when we attended a stay-in course in preparing for our nuptials (to each other that is).
ww: so what did you put in the feedback form?
z: I just said that this weekend was good because it allowed me to explore myself ….
ww: *lol*
z: omg, that sounded bad. What's worse is that the rest of the sentence reads: “allowed me to explore myself and each other”
ww: *rotfl*

Weekend with Jeanie
There was a nice tray table thingie which was kinda pricey and bulky, but served the purpose of using the laptop in bed without having a backache. Yet to consider, and who said Singaporeans are not innovative?
Picked up a clean and fluffy dog from the groomers and she was absolutely prancing about while walking to the car, tail in the air, chin up high, big grin plastered on her face. She's such a darling. We even found time to visit Snowy the Husky, who wasn't too pleased that we went without warning her, and she was having a bad hair day, compared to my princess fresh from her groomers. LOL Definitely some bitch-talk going on there. Ha!
Today was also the first time that she took a ride in our new car. WW thinks that she likes it, i am not so sure. She did sleep in the car on the way back (tiring day afterall) so it was a smooth ride then. =)

CommunicAsia

Geekland beckoned and i answered the call. The gadgets were cool, the technology was awesome and the people just great. Ok, so there were lotsa eye candy around, i guess sex sells. Great way to spend a weekday anyways. :)
ps. there was one incident which stood out for me, which was a guy 'trading' business cards with one of those models. Rather dubious proposition since it is pretty obvious the poor girl doesn't have a single pocket to store her own cards even if she had one, given the amazing scarcity of cloth in her outfit, so how to trade cards?
pps. how come all these models are all so tall and lanky one? If i want to feel like i'm standing in the middle of a bamboo forest, i would go to one and do so, like House of Flying Daggers.

Weekend capers
One particular sequence of events stood out over the weekend.
On Sat, we had a great father's day lunch at Central mall (or Soho @ central to others) at this jap pasta place. Yum! Then went to install solar film for the car (to the tune of "but you don't drive in the day!?" from some quarters) which was for safety, fuel economy and 'cos it looks cool (ouch, that pun hurted!).
The guy was pretty good and very meticulous about the job, and affordable too! At about 6 he was done and I went to look for wibblewamble in town. She was looking for teapots for our tea ceremony and had been teapot hunting the whole afternoon. I called her and she said that Robinsons would have the best range so she was heading there now. So I made my way down to town, and fought off some pretty bad traffic (and the odd errant lane switcher, grrrr) and found a nice parking lot at Raffles City even though it was pretty crowded. Had to make my way up the many flights of escalators to end up at the teapot section in Robinsons.
"Where are you?"
"I'm by the teapots"
"So am I!"
"I dun see you"
"Neither do I"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm right here!"
"Wait, which Robinsons are you at?"
*zeenie thinking: uh-oh, there is more than one? xiao liao*
"Raffles City"
"I'm at Centrepoint lah!!"
"Crap! I'll see you there in a bit then."
So I got back into the car and fought the by-now heavy traffic in town. Got to Centrepoint car park and thankfully there was only a short queue to enter the car park. Then I found out why. The car park was full but each time a car came out, a car would be allowed to enter, just like any other car park. Also, they had the split level car park thing going where you had a basement car park and a higher floor (in this case 5th onwards) car park. What was different was that instead of putting the exit gantry beside the entrance gantry at the only route in and out of the car park, there were exit gantries places at the exit of the basement car park and the high floor car park. There wasn't any electronic status board to let you know whether to go up or down (there was outside the carparkn which said 'full' for both sections), so if you chose wrongly (like I did, basement parking fanatic), the only way you could go to the other section was to pay to exit the basement and go to the higher floors. There were absolutely no lots in the basement, and there were many cars circling, but no lots. I waited behind another car waiting for a lot for half an hour and then gave up. I paid a dollar to exit the basement and went upstairs, and up, and up, and up, and up until the roof. No lots, just cars circling like buzzards at a desert buffet. Oh wait, I meant singaporeans at a dessert buffet, but same diff. So down I went again, round and round and round and round and round, until the exit gantry. Guess what, it didn't let me through. Had to call the guy on the intercom who said "wait ah, I progamming into system now." Another dollar deducted later, I was free to escape the multi-level gridlock from hell, straight into the orchard road saturday night jam. I turned off at the nearest building two blocks away from Centrepoint and found a car park and walked.
Teapot purchase and a dinner later, we felt well enough to face the world again. I had gathered that ww had a similar experience just that hers was human traffic and she had to contend with a more in-your-face kind of crap. As we were walking out, we noticed that Timberland was still open. They had a nice shirt for me and quite a decent discount going, so I bought that. While waiting to ring up the bill, we chatted with the guy there and he told us about the various discounts, and one of our credit cards had a further discount. I saw a nice gore-tex jacket for ww that was waterproof and windproof, so we got that as well.
When we got outside, we stopped in shock. Not because of the long cab queue, that's always there, but because it was pouring. Absolute cats and dogs stuff.
Transport costs: $30
Shopping: $300
The look on ww's face when she realizing that even though it's pouring, you don't have to get wet because of your recent purchase of a waterproof jacket: Priceless

farting epilogue
There’s a sad epilogue to my tale of woe,
when the source of the gas decided to go.
I walked into the toilet to do the deed,
in an absolute rush and nothing to read.
I took the only stall of two that was free,
with some unknown guy next door to me.
It started off good, no signs of the gas,
and then the familiar sound came out of my @$$
“Ye gods” the stranger muttered and prepared to exit
The smell was pretty bad, even I had to admit
I hope he was done ‘cos he left in a hurry
One thing’s for sure, I won’t be eating anymore curry!
Word! Bwahahahahaha
cable tv
Starhub increases cable television subscriptions.
I don’t know about you, but I’m cancelling my subscription. I’ve had it with the numerous repeat telecasts, lousy advertisement timing and drab content. This price increase is the last straw. As much as I like the discovery channel, national geographic, and travel & living, I will not condone a course of action which will led to this price adjustment. I will provide them an option when I cancel though: a) calm and soothing voice talking about the unjustness of it all or b) lotsa yelling and pointed words towards some poor feller who is paid to answer the phones. Funny thing is, chances are that option b gets the result. We are not used to the voice of reason, only words of action (especially of the vulgar kind).
True stories on the MRT
What's worse than getting a seat and finding the person on your right falling asleep and leaning on you? It's when the person on your left starts falling asleep as well!
Then there is what I like to call the "hot seat bonus", where you manage to get a seat, but when your bum touches the surface of the seat,...... yikes! It's hot! Wth?!? And you try to recall if the human torch had been sitting there. So you sit on the very edge, utilizing butt muscles you never realised you had in order to maintain stability. Two or three stops later, you inch your way backwards and bliss, the seat is cool again. Joy.
Then a pregnant lady boards the train and you automatically offer up your precious cool seat (like a good boy scout). Drat!

Farting
Short of sitting on the throne, I find that there are simply no situations where I can do so with ease of mind and lack of embaressment.
Example 1: my roommate steps out for a moment, and seizing the chance, I let go a ripper. However due to poor air circulation, my roomy returns and wrinkles a nose while I try not to blush.
Example 2: at the urinals, I couldn't help but release an invisible zephyr, and whadayouknow, another guy walks into the toilet and straight in the urinal area and waiting cloud of gas. Mutters something, does an about turn and makes a quick escape. All this while I am unable to leave the scene of the crime due to a constant stream that is flowing. Wonderful.
Example 3: I'm in the lift and I am the only one to get on at the ground floor. The (now-familiar) feeling of gas building up grows and it is a stinker! Unfortunately someone gets on at the second floor and woah, he holds his nose while I try to look nonchalant and avoid the feeling of burying my head in the ground.
Sigh

talk about taking them to the cleaners!
Saw this article while reading the news today and the frivolity of it just stuns me, and coming from a judge as well! He really should know better.
On a personal note, what do you do when a local laundromat screws up your laundry and leaves an orange stain on the sleeve of a white Italian shirt? I sent it back of course, and now they have gotten back to me and sent me my shirt yesterday…… with the orange stain still there. I called again to complain and they explained that the stain is very stubborn and they gave me two choices:
a) wear the shirt first and send it to them for laundering, and then repeat, the stain *should* slowly be lifted off
b) send the shirt back to him for some intensive stain removal, which may or may not do the trick and he cannot guarantee that my shirt will come out ok.
THIS IS MADNESS!! My shirt was perfectly alright, spotless and stainless when I sent it in! Why in the blue blazes should I suffer because of their incompetence?!? Argh!
In other news, cable TV charges have gone up! WTH?!? Everything also go up! It’s a monopoly and we have no choice! I really pity those people who signed up just before the price increase, because they cannot opt out without incurring penalty charges. Next time, I’m going to run a taxi service, where the rates per km creep up slowly, “because my rates have stayed constant for the past 12 kilometers already you know!”, and the commuter has no choice ‘cos already boarded the cab. Muhahahahahahaha

everything also increase
Aside from the upcoming GST hike, the recent NETs furore threatens to increase prices for consumers even more. That’s what happens in a monopoly situation. It makes me so pissed off I would cut up my NETs card if not for the fact that it is also my ATM card. Bleah.

Saturday...
Busy day, woke up early for gym and picked up tickets for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End on Saturday, courtesy tixs from wibblewamble’s friend. As she went for her session, I got busy with washing the car and having a short run on my own (at a different gym because of cheaper parking) before heading out to pick up some food for us. Had to practically wolf them down because we were due to attend ww’s sister’s Call. It was interesting and the ceremony was simple yet poignant, and CJ’s speech this year was timely as it emphasized the issue of being ethical, and to reinforce that point, all the newly qualified lawyers were given a free copy of a latest book on ethics and law in Singapore. I hope the newly qualifieds can uphold the profession as a noble and honourable one. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I were a lawyer. But I nosso smart.
After that, we rushed off to watch the show at Cathay. It was my first time watching a movie there, and the grand old dame has changed quite abit. Even though we sat quite far in front, the view was quite good. The movie itself was entertaining, a little slapstick at times, but definitely better than the second in terms of plot. It was quite long so we had to rush abit in order to make it home to cook for friends that were coming over that night. Dinner was fun with the band and a few other friends bringing a dish each, we had pizza, fried chicken, pork ribs, egg mayo, and fishballs (from Tiong Bahru). Wibblewamble outdid herself once again with mussels (in a cream sauce) and crabmeat pasta. Mum contributed fresh steamed prawns and roasted chicken that were gobbled up even though everyone said they already had enough. Dessert was a divine crepes with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and strawberries, which was wolfed down even though everyone said they definitely had enough after the roasted chicken wings and prawns.
Ended the night playing pictionary with cousin T and A, with much hilarity and laughter, as pictionary games do usually generate. I doubt we will be hearing the end of a rather interestingly drawn turkey. Phew! What a day!
