rude trademark?

Back in March 2005, the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand accepted CNUT has a trademark, as it was deemed to be inoffensive to the community. Pundits were questioning this and wondering how the similar application would fare in Australia, and in May 2005, this was accepted by IP Australia as well.

Personally, i wonder how this application would fare in Singapore (being a (selfish?) Singaporean) what with the likes of FCUK already established and well objected to here. Then i realised it would be alright here, since this organisation is lagi more established, with branches in supermarkets, childcare, insurance etc. ;-)

Feel free to read the full story from Baldwins.

Update: I just realised that mr brown and company have alrady blogged about this. Oh well. =)

Huh?

Came across this while trying to search for information on a game that my human character died in and became a zombie. Quite cool, only that i preferred to be human. Zombie Squad: "Nobody knows the walking dead like Zombie Squad. With one of the toughest training programs in the business, our Zombie Extermination
Specialists make up the world's premier non-stationary cadaver
suppression task force."

I feel safer already...
I can't believe such groups exist and even worse, people actually hire them.

Weekend humour

Had a strange thought while walking through Bugis mrt on Sat night due to the recent bombing (see Rockson's post here). Just finished soccer so was going to meet WW at her office in Raffles Place. How i ended up at Bugis is another story altogether, knowing my deficiencies with the most excellent public transport here. Anyways, i was wearing like shabby soccer clothes with a change in my backpack and saw that my train was just arriving. Thought of running for the train as usual but stopped myself. Didn't want to be mistaken for a you-know-what, especially in light of this unfortunate death. So i walked slowly, but not too slowly as to invite attention to myself, although the only thing remotely suspicious in my backpack would be my really stinky shirt. Strange how events so far away make us think differently.

Back to transport woes, I was walking out to the bus stop at Tampines, wondering how to get to Raffles when i saw a bus approaching. It said "Tampines - Something something (bus moving too quickly)", and i wondered whether it would take me to Tampines or the other direction, but i figured that either way was fine by me. I would either end up at Tampines mrt and take the train to town, or i'd end up somewhere at least closer to town, so i ran for it and hopped on. While running alongside the bus (always a fun thing to do after playing two and half hours of soccer), the signboard thingie said "Tampines" and i was happy, 'cos i was dying for a drink and there were many happy merchants in Tampines who would be happy to sell me that drink (100plus i adore thee).

5 minutes into the journey, i found out that i would have to wait a little longer for that drink. It was heading for, well, at that time, the unknown, although it was in the right direction. I decided then to jump off when i saw an mrt station, or a coffeeshop that sells drinks, preferably at an mrt station with a coffeeshop that sells drinks.

It was quite amusing to see the looks i got from my fellow passengers (who obviously knew where they were going) when ww called me to ask me where i was, 'cos my reply was
"Err...... i have no idea where i am, except that i'm on a bus, heading for (what i hope to be) town, will tell you more when i get there" (yes, i somehow managed to emote parentheses into my conversation)

From time to time you rediscover bits of Singapore that you knew, and for me that Sat night, it was Bendermeer. The lights! The glamour! The funky little shops! Speaking of the latter, there was a shop on the way which proclaimed its ability to dub stuff from tapes like VHS and casettes to CDs and DVDs, cutting edge stuff.

I spotted Sim Lim in a distance and decided that i pushed my luck enough and would walk to Bugis. Only later i found out it was a loop service ah! Lucky I didn't press my luck! And i did manage to get my drink at Sim Lim.....ahh, satisfaction is a can of 100 plus after a session of soccer.

Was at Toys R Us on Sunday and this conversation transpired about shops with expensive gadgets for kids-at-heart:
WW: You know, it's fun to be in a toy store again. Funny how as adults we go to adult toy stores.....
Z: Errr... *splutter* *laughs*
WW: i mean, you know, stores that sells toys for adults!
Z: *laughs out loud*
WW: oh forget it....

Telegraph | News | Soldiers forced to shout 'bang' as the Army runs out of ammunition: "Soldiers are facing the undignified prospect of being forced to shout 'bang, bang' on military training exercises after an admission by the Army that it is running out of blank ammunition."

I wonder whether got IA* or not? Sore throat mah......

IA = army acronym for Immediate Action, signifying that the gun did not go "bang" when you pulled the trigger.

Update: From mr brown's comment section, apparently different armed forces have different err..... guns.
Americans either say "Peanut Butter Peanut Butter Peanut Butter...." (with jam?) or "Buddha Buddha Buddha..." (but i'm a christian!)
While some clowns in our own army have been pretending they have laser guns and saying "diu diu diu diu..." or "tiu tiu tiu tiu..." depending on your dialect group.

deleting words from dictionaries

What a short sighted way to correct a problem: "UK teaching group to consider banning word 'fail'"

Man, if we had to ban words just because they discouraged children, we're going to end up with a vocab of like a thousand words. Egads.

"The case has sparked a frenzy of speculation on the internet, with online chatrooms, web blogs and forums featuring names of celebrities claimed to be the people involved in the bust.

Entertainment site biggie.co.nz warned members against posting names because it was illegal.

'If people are going to insist on posting names after we have requested that everyone not, we will be forced to ban people if they continue to do so,' the website moderator said.

Auckland businessman Aaron Bhatnagar closed down comment on his blogspot after names were published."

StreetWars: Killer - NYC

Came across this and can't help if this game would be appropriate in our jittery current times. I was just taking the train home as usual and saw a group of police SOC troops patrolling the station. Good grief, reminded me of a picture of one of those UN patrols in a war-torn country.

gripes

*rant*

I was just reading the Straits Times online and could not help feeling unsatisfied by the level of journalism that was being exhibited.

The article concerned the death of two soldiers on exercise, stating that the unit that the soldiers belong to was based at Endon Camp. What the hell? Maybe the reporter meant Endor? I know that unit garang and even got best unit somemore, but to train on a fictional jungle planet complete with Ewoks and all is a little too far fetched for me....

*rant end*

NKF saga

Amongst the links that mr brown listed in relation to the NKF saga, this one stood out the most for the exhobitant amount of money required to get star endorsement. Man, now i know why Dove hired those people off the street to be models for them afterall, they could get 7 ordinary people for 1 Fann Wong, and get publicity for doing so at the same time. Clever indeed.
NKF BUST: DOING GOOD FOR MONEY?

While we were trying to get stars to endorse our pink WMD T-shirt, I tried to get Fann Wong (whom I like very much and think is a great flagbearer for our country). Her management said they would give me a discounted rate of $7000 for her to appear in our T-shirt in a poster that would only go out online and in the shops.

I said for $7000 I would have to stand in the street corner and hawk 200 T-shirts just to pay these bloodthirsty sharks. None of that money would go to the shelter.

The reply was, "You know how many charities ask her to do this kind of thing or not?" My guess is a lot. So they must have made a lot of money by now.

As if charging charities is going to help the situation. Oh maybe it did, because I just said thank you and hung up. Her management either didn't get what I was saying, or they didn't give a flying pig's arse.

The New York Times > Technology > Multimedia > Video: "This week, David Pogue has arranged for a special guest video artist:
Scott Kelby, Photoshop maven. Last week, as he keynoted his own Mac Design conference, he played a hilarious Apple ad spoof for something called the iPod Flea, which I'm pleased to offer in its Web debut."

Cowardly Attack on London

BBC NEWS: "In what appears to have been a co-ordinated terrorist attack, there were blasts on three Underground trains and a bus, as the morning rush hour drew to a close."

The inhumanity of this terrible act is too troubling to comprehend. The bombers should be chemically castrated, so that all they will make in the future is little clothes and hats for their barbie dolls.

My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to all affected.

dinner @ Oso

We celebrated our first anniversary last night, no, it's not been a year since we got together or started going out.
It's not one of those random ones either, you know, the ones that go like "tonight's the second anniversary of the first time we took a cab together....to suntec....on a sunday....afternoon"

It's been a year since i proposed and she agreed,
a year since the violin sang,
A year spent looking for places to feed
our family, friends, colleagues the whole gang.

***************************************

Based on the many many reviews i read, i picked (and take responsibility (aka blame/credit) *sigh*) Ristorante Oso, and inspired by Tym, this is the review.

Walking into the restaurant (or ristorante if you want to be picky), things did not start well, with my reservation for a quieter table being lost in translation or something, so we ended up being wedged between a table of 2 Japanese businessmen discussing business and another table of 2 researchers (i think), whom i suspect is in town for a conference. All 6 of us might as well join tables and conversations, as the gaps between the tables could barely accommodate the thickness of the tablecloths, let along a person walking through. Not a good start. The funny thing is when we were shown to our table, we were told that to account for their lapse, they would allocate the table next to us last, but this was not fulfilled as when the researchers seated as there were still free tables around.

The food: we had the stracci with wild boar, which kinda reminded me of corn beef actually, pardon my low-class tastebuds; and the 8-hour-oven-baked lamb rack, kinda overdone, since i (ww too) like our lamb medium rare. The much raved-about tiramisu was good but not fantastic, we've had better, family cooking/baking notwithstanding. Honestly i couldn't see what the fuss was about, and neither could ww. The red wine that was recommended did not really suit our food and we ended up swapping wines (table next to us didn't finish theirs).

The service was abysmal, and this was due to them being short-staffed by three (i later found out). We had to repeat everything that we wanted twice, from butter and olive oil for our bread (it turned up later sans olive oil) to our desert of tiramisu. It was so frustrating that we didn't order anymore food after the mains (we thought the venison sounded good) and desert and called for the check, which took another test of patience. I believe the correct attitude for a waiter should be friendly but not familiar, knowledgable but never condescending, however the opposite seemed to ring true, save the manager.

I reckon that the service and ambience contributes to any dining experience and rated our dinner a C- at best, the only saving grace being the food but not by much. In terms of food, wine and service, maybe we have been spoilt by our experiences in NZ, but we have been treated well at other local restaurants so that is unfounded.

Note to self: don't trust reviews, don't try new places on important dates, and don't trust the alcoholic content of italian wine. lol

catching up

Caught up with my uni lecturer from Christchurch last night, he was in town for a conference and it was great to catch up over dinner. He's originally from the US and he's surprised at how pro-american we are here, saying that restaurants that say "Best ribs in America" would never work in NZ 'cos of the anti feeling there. He also saw fast food places that he only saw back home in the States although he won't step into one just yet as he's having too much fun trying all the local food.

Looking at what we have around us, it is quite easy to take it all for granted until someone comes along and opens our eyes. *thoughtful look*

On a different note, going home was a breeze last night.... many thanks for the lift buddy. =))

Had a pretty full weekend and am feeling pretty durian-ed out (thanks to ww for that phrase) from all the face stuffing sessions. Came across this cartoon, anyone remember Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat? I remember spending all that time and effort in a bid to play a better game, and now its free. Ahh, the memories....LOL

You know you feel old when you look at kids playing computer games these days at the arcade waving their hands all over and dancing (personally, i stomp on them) on those machines, or even playing drums (someone scored 63 million points over the weekend?!?!?), guitars or assorted driving games (can set radio station one woh) and you think to yourself "man, back in my time, all we had was street fighter......and we were happy!"
