Happy New Year! *Oink!*
zeenie, wibblewamble and jeanie would like to wish all readers a happy and prosperous lunar new year!
I find it ironic that given that it is the year of the pig, i am looking to go (for the first time in my life) on a diet. This is no ordinary no carbs after 6pm rule, for i am aiming for some serious weight loss. Our wedding is in Nov and i wanna look good for my bride! LOL
At the same time, this is of course the worst time to be declaring this given that tis the season that we all pig out on the amazing spread ofoily yummy good food, but i can always try. I figure if i can diet during CNY, i can diet anytime! =)
In other news, we have just returned from a trip to Myanmar, so more news and photos from that in a bit. One of the first signicant things we did was to order a new car, the Suzuki SX-4. We're only collecting the car in June, so that plenty of time yet. Man, even at the point of signing, i was still seriously tempted by the Swift Sport but practicality ruled and we listened to the advice of our parents in the end.
Played for mass today, being a Sunday, as well as the first day of Chinese New Year and what can i say, we totally RAWKED!! We even did our own rendition of the gong xi fa cai song, which had people scratching their heads for a bit because of all the funky ad-libs that were going on. I bet they thought they knew the song, then thought they didn't, then realisation hit them that we're improvising. =) We also have some new songs for the mass proper, including an Alleluia that is so blusey, it would make a smurf turn green with envy. I had to resist the urge to sway like Ray Charles, but now understand why people get emotional when playing such music. Powerful stuff.

biting contest
Interesting story today about a police dog who got bitten by an allged robber, he bit back and won. =)
This dog has been in the news in the past because he required medical treatment after apprehending a suspect who did some damage with a knife. Good to hear that he's back on duty and showing none the worse for wear. The appeal for blood was especially poignant for me. Go Edge!!
In other news, zeenie and ww will be heading overseas where internet connections may be limited. We'll post more new after we return before CNY. =)

small world
As if to prove to everyone that Singapore is really small, we have two sides of the same story (props to Cowboy Caleb).
Guy gets told off for using his PDA in a restaurant.

Simply amazing. Who do you believe? =)
On the same note, i've always been curious as whether other parties to various incidents that i blog about actually write about the same experiences. I wouldn't be surprised if there were, but i wouldn't know where to look.

dinner review
The Duxton Hill area is becoming our new favourite place for fancy places to eat. Previously, we had eaten at Broth (21 Duxton Hill. Phone 6323 3353) and found it very good, with the innovative and well excuted dishes and an ambience that cannot be matched.
Last night, we were introduced to our new favourite French restaurant, Creperie Ar-men. Quite alot of the stuff on offer were imported from Brittany, France and it was really very good. We started off with cider (brut) that was not of the usual sweet variety, but had more of a beer-y feeling to it (don't really know how to describe the taste!). Then we proceeded to salad, soup and escargots. The snails were seasoned quite well, so it tasted good and was cooked succulently while the foie gras salad was a good accompaniment. The french onion soup was slow cooked for absolute enjoyment although the cheese was a little to strong for me (zeenie not a cheese person). Then came the oysters, they were fresh! Ww had about three of them, which is three more than she would usually take, that's how good they were! =) We had some beer from Brittany to go along with the meal and it was gorgeous!
Then came the buckwheat crepes. First up was the chicken and mushroom. Yum! The desserts came next, three different types of crepes, one caramel with vanilla ice-cream, one orange marnier with sorbet, and one with ice-cream and chocolate sauce. *drool*
After dinner we had some digestifs of various flavours including honey (smooth) , apple (sweet), pear (strong!), strawberry (fragrant) and licorice (dun like). The bill for dinner came up to about $85 per pax which is alright considering the amount and quality of the food we had. Abit painful on the pocket but the stomach is happy!
Definitely will go back there again. =)

Taxi gazumpers
So there I was waiting for a cab along Evans road just before Prata Cafe outside a student's hostel of some sort, when this rather young couple (teens?) came out of Prata cafe and started waiting for a cab as well.
Usually the problem lies when people wait on the opposite side of the road because taxis have been known to make a quick u-turn if they see you on the other side of the road. But in this case, I thought it was pretty clear cut, especially since I was there waiting for a cab first. This pair was fairly interesting since they chose to stand near the middle of the road, endangering themselves rather needlessly I felt. After a near miss, they decided to walk and lo and behold, they walked right past me whispering in each other's ears.
"Awwww, how sweet" I thought, until they took up station no more the 5 meters before me to wait for a cab!
What would you do? A few choice words came to mind, including some rather discriminatory ones (age, race, skin colour) but I held my tongue and merely stared in disbelief as she got into a cab and the lad walked back to the hostel. I am really a typical Singaporean to just let it slide and let some young upstart walk all over me and just keep silent about it. Grrrrrrrrr
(Yes, I recognise the dichotomy in my posting this that I am in fact NOT keeping quiet about this. Cleverpants!)
The other side of the coin
I read with interest this bit of news online.
It says that some dude (in NS then) mooched on a neighbour's unsecured wireless network to make a bomb hoax posting online (this was just after the London bombings). This got his neighbour, a 22-year-old female student arrested by the police, her computer was seized and her family questioned.
I find it rather disturbing that no mention of apology or reperation was made. What happened to this poor innocent (and rather naive with a wireless connection apparently) student would startle anyone. The trauma and stress of being arrested must have taken a toll on her. It is good (and heartening) that computer forensics cleared her eventually, and that although the wheels of justice turn slowly, it turns. However, accountability and a fair amount of transparency is not apparent. If such an incident happened in the land of the free, lawyers would have been queueing up to represent the girl. LOL
Personally, i think the guy should be prosecuted with extreme prejudice for such a cowardly act. Since when is being bored and sleepless an excuse?

I was reading boing boing and came across a website showing aerial shots of different places (in UK?) and out ot curiosity, i put our sunny-land into the search term and look what i got! (hopefully the link works)
Apparently there's a Singapore island at the following address:
